African Township Tour
The tour starts at Basambilu Lodge, Lulekani and continues to Humulani, a former refugee camp for Mozambican settlers who came here in the 1980s during the civil wars in their home country.
Here a Mozambican will tells us about his experiences in traversing the wilderness of Kruger Park, and the crocodile infested waters of the Limpopo River during the escape to Lulekani. You’ll experience his family's everyday life, and have a rare chance to see his home, a traditional African hut.Traditional customs dictate that all visitors are welcomed with traditional beer served by women.
Take the opportunity to really understand the Shangaan culture, and their struggle to raise their families torn by war, poverty and disease.
You’ll visit the village kindergarten where guests are welcomed with traditional songs and an orientation by the nurse.
A ritual healer or Sangoma, the village medicine woman welcomes you to her hut. She casts the bones, holds consultations and explains some of the traditional treatments. Together with her trainee, she gives a demonstration of her work and explains her job and importance to the village community.
Our visitors report that the most moving part of trip is the visit to Leka Gape orphanage, home to approximately 50 children from the local Lulekani area who have been orphaned by poverty and disease.
On your return to Basambilu, you’ll enjoy a performance by the Shangaan tribal dancers, and taste some of the traditional local foods.
